Teach Soap

When Doubling or tripling a recipie, can you just double or triple all the ingredients? Or is there anything else I need to take into consideration.

Any time you change a recipe you need to run it through a lye calculator. This includes halving, doubling or tripling the recipe.

ok I found the one on BB, but not sure what to put for the %Superfatting

Usually 5-8% I like 7% superfat and use it for almost all my soap.

I would do 7% superfat, especially for a smalle batch.

I'm not soapbuddy, but... small batches need to be measured much more accurately (not as much wiggle room) so if you do a higher superfat, you're less likely to have problems with it being lye heavy if something was measured inaccurately. All batches should be measured as accurately as possible, but .5 oz on a large batch isn't as critical as .5 oz on a small batch.

As for why 7% - I superfatted at 5% when I first started but after making and using numerous batches, tried 7% and was much happier with the way the soap felt when used, and so were my testers.

Had not considered the mismeasurement issue----VERY good point! I typically superfat at 5%, so was just wondering if I was doing it "wrong" on my smaller batches. Mine range from 2 to 4 pound batches.
What's the "downside" of a higher superfat?

I have also found that other than coconut a high superfat (>10%) decreases lather. I experimented with this once and although it made a great soap for very dry skin in the dead of winter.... it is just creamy and has little lather or bubbles.
