Teach Soap

Hi, I just wanted to share that Amazon has a Kindle e-book available for free right now on basic soapmaking (cold process). I don't know how long it will be available for free or how good it is, but for those of you who might be interested , it's Basic Soapmaking: all the skills and tools you need to get started by Elizabeth Letcavage (editor).

You don't have to own a Kindle to download this e-book, you can download the appropriate Kindle reading app to your computer, phone or tablet too. BTW, I'm not affiliated with Amazon but do love my Kindle.

Hate it when that happens!

I just downloaded this book and it's not bad. She has good basic CP soapmaking info. The only thing I noticed was that she says you can't clean your soapmaking pots/utensils for 24 since the soap is still raw. Yes, it's easier to clean up after the saponification process is finished, but it's not necessary to wait. She gives some recipes, explains about additives and colorants, etc. She also shows how to build your own mold and soap cutter. (I may have to try the cutter!) All in all, an OK book, not as comprehensive as "The Everything Soapmaking Book", but not outdated either.

I have this title in book form and I like it. It's one of my favorite books because it has a ton of color photographs. I'm a visual learner, so the photos really helped everything click in my head. There's good info on CP basics, additives, rebatching, packaging, and equipment. And there's a comprehensive section on making a liner (with photos), which was super-helpful, too. Thanks for sharing the link, armygrl!

Same here, although it's difficult to find pure lye - all the stores I've checked carry the one with metal flakes in it, I guess to discourage the illegal drug manufacturers. I've gotten weird looks when I ask for lye and state that I want to soap with it. And my asthma is bad, I'm on several meds for it and worry about how I might react to any fumes. When I make M&P, I have to turn all the fans and wear a mask and still have an occasional asthma attack. I love smelling FOs, but my lungs don't.

Yeah, I would love to make CP, even just a simple basic recipe and castile soap. Sometimes wearing a respirator at work actually triggers my asthma because of the restricted air flow and I had to get a work exemption from taking patients who require I use one during their care. I'll keep restaurant food distributors in mind when I do decide to take the CP plunge. Thanks for the tip!
