Ok. So I had the hankering the other day to make some whipped body butters, but I wanted a separate stainless bowl to dedicate to this process. The re-sell shop was closed, so I went on over to the Thai market thinking they would have something appropriate. I found a small bowl that the label said it was stainless steel, and purchased it for $3.95, admittedly, more than I wanted to spend. I got it home and washed it in hot soapy water and let it air dry over night. Last night I melted my oils in it over a double boil, and then put it on ice in a larger bowl. As I was whipping up the oils I noticed that the hand I was using to turn the stainless bowl was getting black, like newspaper ink, all over my fingers. This is making me think that the bowl really isn't stainless steel. Any thoughts or comments? Is there some way to test for sure to know rather than relying on a label that may not be accurate? I would hate to end up trying to use this for soap making also, and run into a bigger problem.

It's NOT SS! One way to check is to put one drop of a lye solution on the inside of the bowl. If it turns ANY color it's not real SS.

I should totally take it back. I think I can still fish the label out of the trash can!

I bought a strainer once that said it was stainless steel. I tried to strain lye water through it once. Let's just say that the lye water ended up going down the drain instead of a soap batch & the strainer went into the trash.
