Teach Soap

I have lists of things I need to buy as far as my equiptment, stuff for the first few soaps I want to make and packaging and shipping. But Any sage advise from you seasoned veterans? Things I need that may not be in any book. Types of things every soapmaker should keep in stock or in their tookbox? I just want to start out right. I would appreciate any advice you all have. Thanks!!!

Can't help but I'm new too and just wanted to say Hi. I just got my first set of supplies in today from Bramble Berry.

I would suggest reading everything you can get your hands on about soap making. The more you know, the better your soap will turn out. One thing I did was watch ALL the Soap Queen TV episodes - each one added a bit more info and introduces techniques.

For MP, start out with the basics. Melt till almost melted, then stir the rest of the way so the soap doesn't overheat. Fragrance is used at about 0.5 to 0.7 per lb. of base. Essential oils vary on usage so read up on them. Actually, I would read up on both since some fragrance oils are very strong. Measure you colors in drops if you are using liguid. Micas go a long way, so start with just enough on the tip of a knife and go from there. If you are using white base, you won't get red, since white base has titanium dioxide. You can make pretty pink though. Have fun!

Keep detail records of everything soap related. cause sometimes you want to do the same thing. I keep mine a 3 ring binder with college rule line paper and plenty of pictures of soap and such. a little bit of time goes a long way... happy soaping

It's not something you need to purchase but don't get discouraged if your first batch doesn't come out the way you saw it in your head, keep going! Read and don't hesitate to ask questions. Everyone is really helpful!

Don't use the same utensils and bowls as you use for food unless they are stainless. Even glass, for some reason, can take on a scent if it's older glass that may have unseen residues that the scent can stick to.
