I made two batches of soap two days ago. One of them is perfect the other not so much. This was my fourth batch. There is oil on the top. Does anyone have any ideas what went wrong.

I found a web page that has some troubleshooting tips. It is at http://www.soap-body-and-spa.com/Cold-P ... oting.html It says:

There are several things that might have caused this separation.

First is it might have been possible that your cold process soap mix was not stirred long enough, or that its temperature was too low and the solid fats have congealed before having a chance to react with the lye solution. This is sometimes referred to as a false trace.

If this is an olive oil only soap and you are certain the exact amount of oils and lye have been used, it might simply mean that the soap has not been mixed long enough. Stir the oil in thoroughly and wait another day before unmolding.

A few essential oils and some of the citruses in particular, might sometimes float and form a film around the soap. This oily film is only noticeable if large amounts of this type of essential oil have been used and might dry up in a few days. You might however want to reduce the amount of essential oil used in the future.

Finally in some cases the separation is caused by adding too much lye, if this is the case, you might have to reclaim the soap by hand-milling and rebatching.

I hope you find out what happened. Let us know how it turns out and what you did to "fix" it.

Good idea to find the cause, but remember almost any batch of soap can be saved. Rebatch time! I'm a big fan of kicking up the fragrance in rebatching. Good luck!

I stired the oils back in really good and it looks perfect for now. We'll see what happens. It was mostly olive with a little castor. I mixed for as long as my other batches. Its pretty cold here though. I haven't turned my heat on either. Well i guess i'll check it later and see if the oil is coming back up to the top. Now off to read on rebatching.

Be aware that mostly olive oil takes a long time to trace. A stick blender definitely comes in handy. I would leave it be for a couple of days to see if the oil gets absorbed back in.
If not, I would rebatch.

If you're using a heat-proof mold, you can try popping it in a low oven.
