I know you are supposed to go by weight. But my scale only goes to .05g. So it will tell me there is 90 or 95 g but not 92g. We are only making lotion in small batches now (12-15 oz at a time) to try and get our recipe tweaked. So it is hard to weigh small amounts like the preservative.
When we make the lotion I do see fluctuations in the texture, I can't tell if it is because we are mixing it for varying amounts of time or if the tiny differences in tsp type measurements vs weight are making a difference.
I would assume that my method of adding 3/4 tsp of something like preservative is more accurate then adding a weight of .10g (b/c it could be anywhere from .07 to .13 based on the scale having to round)
Any experience with this kind of thing?
Do you think that hand mixing for 5 min vs 10 min would make a big difference?
Thanks for any input!

For a small recipe like that, I would get a jeweler's scale that can weigh smaller amounts. Once you start making bigger batches, if you don't have an accurate weight, your bigger lotions would come out different then the smaller batch. Teaspoons are VERY innacurate for measuring preservatives. Use too litle and germs, mold and bacteria can grow. Use too much and your product could be irritating.

As far as how long to mix, that depends on your actual ingredients, the actual temps and which preservative you are using. Some preservatives are temp sensitive. I would get a thermometer.

There's really no excuse for not having an accurate scale, because they are very cheap and easy to obtain.
for instance.
It is essential to measure by weight. Different substances have different densities.
When following a recipe it is also important to follow the procedure.
And what soapbuddy said - also very important. Some preservatives must be added during cool-down (e.g. Spectraguard) while others can be added at 70C (Spectrastat, parabens/urea, etc.)

Ooo thank you for the scale link. I had looked around a little but the ones I was finding online were $30-100 so since my friend already had a scale I figured we could just use that one and just measure the small liquid amounts.
Didn't know tsp could be so innacurate, Thanks! Don't want it to grow the nasties!

How big of a batch do many people make lotion in? I am scared to mess it up, so that is why we were making it in such a small batch, but it takes so long (mostly b/c of the heating for 20min part) for only 3 little 4oz bottles of lotion.

My first few batches were 16 oz. That was a good size for me to test-it was enough lotion to give to several people to use for a week or so before they gave me their feedback so I could tweak the recipe.

When I am making test batches I generally make as little as 250g. My normal batch size is 1Kg - 3.5Kg depending on product. However with increasing sales I am going to have to go to 10Kg batches and that means investing in or designing/having made, new equipment.
Use a microwave oven to heat the water and you will sterilise the water and its container at the same time. I can do this with up to 3.5Kg of water. There is one problem with larger batch sizes - if you make a mistake then it is a hell of a lot more wasteful!

I have a 1KG x 0.1g increments and another scale that goes to 10Kg in 2g increments, both from EBay. Between them I can get everything weighed accurately. However, I noticed that on EBay you can find scales of 5Kg in 1g increments, and that's what I consider ideal for everything except the tiniest ingredients.
The main thing to consider is how accurate you need to be.

For instance, let's say I am making a skin cream and let's look at the major/minor ingredients. The major one is of course water. So this is going to be about 80% let's say, and I am making a 1Kg batch, so I need to weigh 800g of water. Now, what accuracy would I like? In general I consider that 1% accuracy is good. (Titrations in chemistry using a burette only get 1% accuracy) So, I need to be able to distinguish 1/100 x 800g = 8g intervals; my 10Kg scale is fine for that because it can distinguish 2g steps.

Let's say the next ingredient is shea butter at 4%.
I need to weigh 0.04 x 1000g = 40g. The small scales will allow me 0.1/40 accuracy = 0.25% no problem.

OK, now let's look at the smallest % ingredient, which is dimethicone petrolatum at 0.2%
I need to weigh 0.002 x 1000g = 2g. The small scales will allow me 0.1/2 accuracy which is 5% accuracy, not so good, but it will do, because in general I am not too worried whether I get + or - 5% too much/little of the ingredients at the smallest concentration.

Going to a scale better than 0.1g would be possible, but the problem then becomes different; it is difficult to use such sensitive scales because the surface they are placed on, and air movement, upsets the reading and it can make it very time-consuming to measure.

I hope that's demystified the scales . . . please work in metric, the old fashioned system is a nightmare and encourages serious errors. Working in metric makes relating % to actual weight a snap.

I am realizing now that I messed up oz and g in my head. My current scale will jump between oz in .05 increments but I'm not sure how low it goes on g, maybe down to 1 or 2g. We were not using g at all though for lotions.
Is g what we should be using? or oz? or just stay consistent?

K so just read the last part of your post above and realize you answered my question =)
But I don't know how to delete a post so I am editing it =)
Sorry!

Wow my husband ordered the 1,000 weight to the decimal for me. $6.88 I believe and free shipping? Can't beat that for an experiment. We'll see how this works. I do have a friend who uses one of these scales.

Thank you so much for the excellent explanations and the link! Isn't it interesting how ones person's explanation doesn't catch on and another's does. Just by choice of words our understanding is effected!

Ok, I was looking at this scale on Amazon, it's currently on sale for $25 (so you can get the super saver shipping). Do you think this is any good?

Hm, I think you might have read it wrong, it measures down to .05 oz, not .5 oz. Think that's still not accurate enough? I noticed the ones on BB measure to .1 oz.
