I bought this can of powdered goat milk about 6 months ago. The can says store for up to 8 weeks. I just soaped using it today, and I'm a wee bit concerned about the longevity of the soap. Do you think the goat milk powder will be okay? How long do you usually keep a can?

If it was vacuum sealed and kept at room temperature, it's probably OK. If you had opened it and it was exposed to air, maybe not. Did it smell OK?

It had been opened, but I DID smell it and there was no rancid odor. Actually, there wasn't much of an odor at all. I soaped it, and I hope it's fine because the soap is turning out beautifully. (plain jane goat's milk and honey soap. nothing tricky and no color. it's SOOO creamy and smooth looking!!!! Can't wait to unmold it!)

Does it have an expiration date?

I've had an open can of GM powder in the pantry for almost 5 months now because I haven't been making GM soap. It's still good - no clumping, bad smell, etc. I think as long as it hasn't expired and it's kept in a dry place it should be fine. You're not mixing it to drink, only to use in soap, which I why I think they say to use it in 8 weeks-after that the taste may be compromised.

I bought my powdered GM from a soap supply store, the expiry date is one year as long as it is kept in a dark dry place. Like my soap caddy

I figured the manufacturer wants you to keep buying it, so they tell you to replace after 8 weeks. I wasn't going to fall for that!

I keep mine in the freezer, just to be sure.

Not a bad idea Mellifera! I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and toss this can and start over, even though it's expensive and I'd hate to waste that money. However, it doesn't smell bad and it doesn't have a weird color. If I were selling them I'd probably just get a fresh can. Since they're for me, I'll just see what happens!

I think as long as it smells ok, and since it's just for you, don't toss it!

I also keep my GM powder in the freezer but as far as I can tell most powdered milks can be kept for ages as long as they are kept dry and cool. Found this page and it has some good info
