Teach Soap

I've just moved to Pittsburgh and went to three different stores today - a Giant Eagle grocery store, a Trader Joe's and a Target supermart. None of those places had lard in either the oils area or the butter/meat refridgerated area. Where on earth do I find the stuff? And am I looking for a nice rectangle-shaped packet like crisco or something else?

I remember seeing "lard" in a tub in Walmart's baking/oil aisle, but wasn't sure that something shelf-stable like that would be the right lard to use. Plus now that I've moved, there are no Walmarts in my area.

So all you lard user soapers out there, where do you get the lard that you find works best in your cp soap?

If you have an ethic food store near you, look for manteca. That's lard.

The lard in the tub at walmart is what I use most of the time. Other places I usually find it in the refrigerated section and does kind of look like a brick of butter or crisco. I have tried to get some pig fat from a farmer but it seems to be in high demand around here. And I am not so sure my DH would like me rendering down the lard in our kitchen.

I recommend not using un-deodorised pig fat. The soap smells piggy.

You might also find it in the section where they sell all the "mexican food" . Thats where they keep it in my warehouse grocery store in Portland, and not, where I would expect, in the baking/oil/crisco aisle.

I am from Pittsburgh originally, i hope you are liking it there . We are living in Burlington at the moment but plan to move back in a year or two so we can be closer to our families.

Depending on the store i have found lard in both the aisle with the eggs and the baking aisle (it was the same exact box too only one was refrigerated and one was not, strange). These were both stores not in Pittsburgh, but i am sure somewhere must have it!

I am not sure exactly where you are but there are a couple of Wal-marts around. North Versailles comes to mind, but it could be a hike from where you are located.
