I live in a small city, where most people are connected by 2 degrees of separation. So things might be a bit more casual here, since everyone knows everyone. One store I wholesale my balms to is invoiced. Another is a store that sells everything (all locally made and farm products) on consignment. The owner is an accountant, there is a contract, and they give you an inventory sheet every time you put in or take something out of inventory. The third is gift shop at the synagogue where we're members, so they're a good credit risk. There's a salon that is interested in carrying my things; the owner is someone who is friendly with two of my friends, and the salon has been in business for a year. So I'll invoice and give her 30 days.
If it were someone completely unknown, I might ask for payment upfront for the first few transactions, and then segue to billing.
