Teach Soap

Hello everyone!

I just wanna ask, what should i do to make my soap moisturizing to skin? because whenever i use my soap, it feels dry on skin. what should i add? Glycerin? Up to how many percent? are there any effects on too much glycerin such as making the soap soft because of too much oil? thanks! )

What was your recipe and how much did you superfat?

Good question about the recipe. Palm of any sort can be drying as well as coconut oils depending on the amounts used.

Any particular reason you want a coconut oil soap? Not sure at your stage of soaping, but if you're looking for an easy beginner soap, I would suggest something along the lines of 60% Olive Oil, 20% Coconut Oil, 15% Palm Oil (sustainable, think of the orangutans!) and 5% Castor Oil. That's a fairly standard beginners recipe

If you're making the soap from scratch, it will make it's own Glycerine So that saves adding that.

Being a wash off product, soap is not going to moisturize your skin. The best you can hope for is that it cleans your skin extremely gently, without stripping the natural oils from it. Coconut is not your best bet for dry skin. If you can use olive oil, try castile. 100% olive. You'll fall in love!

Actually I find that my soap is VERY moisturizing. My skin has never been so soft and lovely.

If you have to use coconut then you have to... but it can be really drying. It is drying on my skin. The only way I get my bar to feel like I just put lotion on my skin is to do a high percentage of olive oil, add shea butter and cocoa butter, and make sure my coconut oil is as low as it can go before the bar gets soft. Just out of interest, who is your boss (in what field), and why do they say to only use coconut? Im not terribly experienced at making soap, and whilst I know it's possible, I have never come across anyone describing a pure coconut oil soap.

The superfat oils in soap definitely moisturize the skin! I have extreme dry skin, it even splits open like cracks sometimes, and I have stopped using moisturizer lotions since using my 7% superfatted soap. Nice and gentle, but also adds some oil. Everyone is right! *gives Coolah and Janina both a high five*
