Hi, all! I’m quite new to soaping, I started in December, and I’ve been lurking here for about that long. But the day has come: I have a question!

I’d really like to make a shaving soap for my fiancée and I found the following recipe that seems doable with what I have on hand:
-40% olive oil
-30% coconut oil
-22% palm oil
-8% castor oil
-1 tsp. Bentonite clay ppo

I’m concerned about the coconut oil. I don’t like to go over 20%, especially since it’s for shaving, and the boy has sensitive skin as it is. I don’t want to sacrifice lather, however, since it is a shaving soap and that is the purpose of the soap, lather.

What do you all suggest? I’ve always gotten decent lather with the body bars I’ve made so far with 20% coconut and 5% castor, but I really want an awesome, creamy, foamy lather for this bar and I have no clue how to achieve that, beyond trial and error with his sensitive ginger face :?

Welcome!
I'm no help as I don't use palm oil and don't go above 20% coconut. I find it drying. I would make a small batch (like 1 lb. converted to grams) and see how you like it.

I love grams! I've been making 500g test batches, and just started giving them out to my friends to try. I'll try this recipe out, maybe cut the coconut a bit, but in the meantime I'll do some more research on thick creamy lather and see what I can find out there in internet land!

I use 30% coconut oil in my recipes and it isn't too drying, in fact my skin condition is better using my own soap than using commercial soap such as Dove. Now Dove, that IS drying. I would replace the palm oil with unrefined shea butter, much nicer.
