Teach Soap

I just tried an experiment for testing color on Saturday(made 2lbs divided about 5/6oz). I mixed madder root/indigo and madder root/woad as well as the moroccan red clay with both indigo and woad(think back to your elementary school days mixing primary colors-red and blue make purple.) I also tried a higher superfat with the alkanet root. All colorants were added at trace, so not sure if it will turn out scratchy or not.(hope not)

Here is what I have observed so far given 2 day cure.

The alkanet root with hight superfat is lighter BLUE not purple, so maybe need to try lower superfat. Already showing signs of ash.

The Moroccan Red Clay/Indigo and Woad-both are kind of a grayish color. No real signs of ash on these.


and the Madder Root/Indigo and Woad came out more purplish. No signs of ash on this one.

Thank you for the pics. How interesting that the pH of the initial soap and or how much you superfat changes the color of the alkanet. I got a definite purple in mine.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Glad I could be of some help. Will keep everyone posted to changes. I plant to in a week or two cut these up and use as embeds in a plain white soap.

Here is an update on the morph of the colors.

Alkanet Root-kinda of a light blue/gray.


Red Clay/Woad-kinda a greenish/gray


Madder Root/Indigo-kinda a pinkish/purple


Madder Root/Woad-kinda a dark gray color


Red Clay/Indigo-kinda a light gray

So...basically they all are kinda , with the exception of the Madder Root/Indigo.
