Hi! I'm a newbie to this forum and a semi-newbie to soap making. I have done a lot of research on getting a white bar of soap but I can't figure it out. I made "Lots of Lather" as is (no modifications) and my Olive oil was EVOO (the 101 oz jug from walmart..can't remember brand). It came out creamy colored with a tint of yellow. How can I get a white bar? I just can't figure it out!

Thanks
Stephenie

The only pure white soap I've been able to get is when I make soap with 100% lard. If your oils are yellow or greenish the best you can hope for is a pale creamy white, unless you use titanium dioxide for color.

Can I ask why does it have to be white?

Sounds perfect! Thank you so much for that. I shall try it in the next couple of days.

my basic recipe always seems to create a white bar, unless I add stuff to it. I made a very nice patchouli, lavender, cedarwood scented bar with flax seeds in it, the only thing not white is the seeds.

6 oz coconut oil
6 oz olive oil
9.5 oz vegetable shortening

8 oz water
3 oz Sodium Hydroxide

TD is great but don't go overboard. Too much and your soap will be chalky.
White soap is a balance of light oils, FO's that don't discolor, and if you prevent gel that will also help a lot.

I ended up using TD and got a nice white bar. I have a few spots where the white balled up, but nothing I can't handle. I think it all looks pretty nice if I do say so myself. My computer is acting funny so I can't post a pic but will as soon as I get it figured out.

Thanks for the help!

I'm new to soaping so i'm going through the posts for info as I have lots of questions. As I'm from Scotland there are some words that i dont know. What is vegetable shortening?
Also the post about gel phase has left me a little confused. I always cover my soap with blankets and leave for 24hrs should I be looking at it to see if it gels? Or just carry on as im doing?

Vegetable shortening is a cooking oil like the brand name, "Crisco". When it is at room temperature it is very thick and solid unlike your liquid oils. You can find it in the baking aisle in the grocery store beside the lard.
