Online is really the only place I have to come when I need some friendship and comforting, I'm extremely shy in real life. So I come to you today just needing someone to talk to. Today I found out that my 14 year old cat, Zach, isn't doing so well. He had some xrays because he is skeletal skinny. The vet wasn't able to diagnose an issue because his intestines are not visible on the xray, this is not normal. His belly was a solid grey mass with evidence of air and calcifications. He has trouble keeping food down and is basically starving to death... so I decided that after the weekend I will take him in and have him put to sleep. He is the most loving boy and even comes when I call him! I'm not sure what I'll do without my boy, I've had him nearly half of my life. It makes me sick thinking about life without him.

I hope none of the rest of you have to go through something like this in the near future, its really stressful and heart breaking. Thanks for being here folks, you really do make things better, even in times like this.

Heather, our pets always seem to be there for us... now you have the weekend to be there for him. I did the same thing with my dog of 14 years. I will say a few prayers that you have a good weekend with him and that you have the support you need to get you through the rest.

Heather, I'm really sorry to hear about Zach...I've never had a pet (always wanted one, though) but I know that they become members of the family, and that this is a big loss for you. I'll be thinking of you and hope that you're able to get through the heartbreak as best you can. Take care of yourself, ok?

Oh hunny, I am so sorry. I know the pain you are going through as I too had to make an almost identical decision with Lou Lou, my border collie dog when I was younger. She was the runt of the litter, but her personality outshone everything. Yet sadly, before her life had even really begun, her small intestines collapsed. The pain and guilt you feel having to make one of the hardest decisions you can when it comes to your pets is beyond words. I wish I was closer, to hold your hand and sit silently beside you Monday morning.

Take photos of this weekend - even of just his face. Spend the weekend giving him more love than he knows what to do with, and talk to him, tell him how much you love him. And please take what ever small comfort you can in knowing that you gave him a great life as well as a peaceful passing. He is such a blessed cat to have chosen you as his owner, parent ... companion.

If you need anyone to talk to, at any time, I am here via PM or on the forum.

*comforting hug*

Heather, I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Zach. I went through something similar several years ago with my parents' cat, Chelsea. She was also kind of my cat, as we had taken her in when I was eleven and I lived with her for about 11 years. Chelsea was sixteen years old when she got very sick. Nothing could be done, so we made the decision to put her to sleep. My mom couldn't bear to go, so my dad and I took Chelsea to the vet and I stayed with her as she passed. The decision to put her down was a heartbreaking one to make, but it was the kindest thing to do. All that lay ahead for her was suffering.

It sounds like Zach was lucky to have such a wonderful life with you. Our animal friends have such a special place in our hearts, and Zach knows that you love him. I will be thinking about you, and I wish I could be there to comfort you, too. {{HUGS}}

Thanks so much guys... one of you prayed to the right deity! He kept his food down overnight and today is feisty and doing wonderfully! We decided to give him a little while longer on the new food the vet fed him yesterday. I'm SO excited!

Thank you all for your kind words, it means the world to me to have such wonderful friends!

Fingers crossed for both of you, Heather. The internet is indeed a strange place sometimes, but the feeling of genuine friendship and caring thought shines through on a forum like this (even though ive placed but a small number of posts, it's easy to see). Just because you are at the other end of a computer screen doesnt stop it from being real life either.
Good luck with Zach, and when he's a little better, get a photo of him up so we can all see him :)

Take care,
Adam

Heather that is very good news! I have four of my own and will keep the prayers coming your way for you and Zach. I am sure you know, but just in case, many EO's and too much FO's are not good for cats to breathe their systems cannot filter them like ours and even dogs, so just something to be aware of even more now in his weakened state. Again, great news!

Thank you Selena! None of the animals are allowed in the room where I cure my soaps and store my soaping caddy. I hope that's enough to keep it safer for him!
