Ok that's really helpful thanks both of you xxx - I did wonder if the weight of a 1lb batch was 1lb when finished or when starting, also now I reckon that each 1lb in a recipe will make 4 x 100g soaps.
Is a pity about room temp, I thought that way sounded nice. But is why am in here eh - to live & learn .
You use # for lb, I haven't seen that before. Learning !

If you convert a 1 lb. recipe to grams you will have a better accuracy.

I have scales in both imperial and metric soapbuddy, so can do that yes. I find your recipes sound and feel easier in lbs than ours do, faffing about with odd metric numbers. You round yours up to the nearest lb which seems better.

# is actually the universal symbol for pounds  The things you can learn in physics! Grams are definitely more accurate than pounds or even ounces.

I have just bought this book on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Natural-Soap-Me ... 308&sr=8-1
The husband is moaning that this soap is going to cost a lot of money and why don't I just buy "normal" soap from Tescos

Shan - yes, it does seem to cost a fair bit when you start buying all the different oils and fats :)
Im not sure what the equivalent of Crisco is over here - you would need to know what the SAP value is for any shortening-type product prior to use. Probably easier to go with the suppliers you have found.

Cheers,
Adam

Trex is a common UK shortening.

Shan, thanks for the education on faffing! I love it!
As for just buying soap from a store.... well there is so much fun and pride to be had when making your own soap. Plus you get to controll the ingrediants that go into the soap - types of oil, color or not, types of fragrance or not, any exfoliants etc. Plus you get a better quality soap, I think. Alot of the large soap makers will remove the glycerin, a natural biproduct of saponification, and sell it to the cosmetic companies. So the last bar of soap I made, Ann Maries Neapolitan, cost me approx 1.50 for a 5 oz bar. But this of course does not take into consideration my time and cost of molds, electricity. I make soap for the fun of it.
