Is there a simple beginners recipe that doesnt involve anything fancy, that you can just mix and pour and leave? Without all the superfatting and gelling and so forth? I think I'm getting muddled with it all .

Try exploring the Miller homemade soap page. (If I knew how to link you to it I would, but my computer skills are basic). The all vegie recipe was one of those that I used in the beginning. Plus she has lots of more info than just recipes. You could also check out the soap queen blog on Brambleberries site. Ann Marie is always posting recipes, but I am not sure how 'simple' some of them are?

Here's the link to Kathy Miller's site: http://www.millersoap.com/

You definitely want to have some superfat in your recipe just to be sure it's not lye heavy. An unsuperfatted soap can be pretty harsh! Gelling is a normal part of the saponification process and will almost always occur in CP soapmaking.

You can make a great soap with just olive (65%) & coconut oils (35%) I know some people don't like to use that much coconut oil, but if you superfat at 7%, it's a wonderful soap with lots of bubbly lather. This was one of the first recipes I used and it turned out perfectly. :D

A simple recipe

10 oz of olive
10 oz of coconut
10 oz of palm
1 oz shea butter
2 oz castor oil

7.4 lye
10 oz of water

this will give you approx a 3 lb batch A 5 % superfat already figured in.

The only oil you probably can't find at Walmart is the palm and shea butter. You could get some shea from health food store. You could substitute the palm with lard as long as you run through the soapcalc and make sure you have enough lye.

solidified vegetable oil....or shortening. To me its the vegetable equivalent to lard used in baking.

Ok - more questions, sorry
On a forum (not here) I read how a lady makes her soap. She calls it room temperature cp. RTCP. It sounds far easier for me than what you're all doing in here. Has anybody here tried it and what are the snags ? She dumps the fats & oils in the pot then pours the lye on and stirs until it all melts on its own.I dont mind standing stirring for a bit and it seems a lot less hassle.

My favorite soap is:
50% olive oil
25% lard
20% coconut oil
5% castor oil

It makes a really nice bar and is now my go to recipe =)

Thank you, I am saving all these in a folder. One last silly question now - when you say this recipe gives 2lb of soap/8lb of soap etc - how many 100g bars is that roughly - ie bath-sized soaps ?
