Hi Guys,

I've had a request come through for a rainbow butterfly soap for a little girl about to start chemo.

I was thinking of doing say 7 butterflies all plain colours (red, orange, blue, etc) then slicing them up and making rainbow butterflies out of the pieces. I'm trying to think of the best way to put it all together though.

Option A - Use clear MP base and basically 'glue' them together. But won't that leave small gaps between the pieces?
Option B - Only make half the colours, slice those, then use the remaining colours and do an embed sort of job. But then won't the melted colour go underneath the embeds?
Option C - I read on a website that you can put all the pieces back in the mold so they are snug, then pop it in the microwave for 3 - 5 seconds and it will melt enough to stick together, but not enough to run everywhere. Would that really work?

I really want to make these perfect for her ...

What about pouring the mold in many thin coloured layers? It would be a rainbow from the side!

What about pouring it in a loaf pan, many rainbow layers, cut bars, then use a butterfly cookie cutter? That would give you the stripes on the front like you want!

Ooh, another option! I don't have a butterfly cookie cutter though :( Hrm, wonder where I could pick one up quickly.

Depending which base you have and how big the butterfly would be, you could swirl it with colors that don't bleed. If you pour each color over a spoon, it will swirl a little, but shouldn't muddy up the colors too much.

I'm not sure if this is still needing advice or not, but I have the perfect solution for you. :)

Get yourself a butterfly mold, such as this one from Wholesale Supplies Plus: (Hope I'm allowed to mention them, just doing so in case she wants to find one.)

Then, use the rainbow gradient mentioned in the Soap Queen's blog:

It uses a tilt in the mold and three separate color layers overlapping slightly with a clear soap base. This way they blend together. Then you fill up with white soap to make the colors Pop!

You can find the tutorial here:

It's really a fabulous tutorial...I plan on using it with my daughter for Valentine's, as she adores rainbows herself. :) But I hope this suggestion got to you in time. Or if all else fails, perhaps you can surprise her with a totally new look to her soap!

Thanks for the info :) I ended up making the rainbow cake that's in the show off thread. :D
