Teach Soap

Hey everyone! I'm new to this forum but I have been soaping for a little over 6 months. First off, I just want to say how amazing and helpful everyone on this forum is. I love all the tips/hints/tricks and pictures!!
I do have a question though. My mom is on this huge Coconut Oil kick and I wanted to make her some coconut oil soap. However, isn't too much coconut oil in soap bad for the skin? I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to execute a good recipe with the majority being coconut oil. Thanks!

Welcome!
Try 100% coconut with 20% superfat. It makes a very nice soap; not drying at all.

No, not at this moment it isn't. My mom has been reading and cooking with coconut oil and coconut water and loves it. In one of her books it mentions that you can make soap with 100% coconut oil and so I thought she might like it. Although that is a GREAT idea if I can get the soap to come out right! *crosses fingers*

Just make sure you run it through a lye calculator. If you will be making a small recipe, you might want to convert it to grams for better accuracy.

I love coconut oil and use it in all my soaps usuallly at 30%. I just recently started making soaps with coconut milk too So maybe you will want to give that a try as well. You can use the milk as your liquid to mix with lye instead of water or add to superfat.

If you haven't made soap before, start out simple; just oil(s), water and lye. Once you get familiar with the whole process, then slowly start adding any milk, herbs, additives like colors or fragrances.

I will definitely keep that in mind. I've made a few batches but nothing crazy. For the most part I like to keep it simple but I'm slowly branching out to add some fun colors and scents.

My first batch of 100% CO 20% SF finally hit the six week cure, and OMG the lather! Unfortunately, both DH and I found it too drying in the shower, so it's only going to be used for hands in the kitchen and bathrooms. I've been using it in the kitchen for several days now and weirdly, it gets all the raw food stuff off my hands and doesn't dry them out, but the rest of my body, not so awesome. Just goes to show that everyone's skin is different.
