Is there a way to make baby wipes without having to use a preservative? I'm thinking not because of the water content but if anyone has any insight for me...that would be GREAT!

Most baby wipes solution I've seen just use mp soap dissolved in warm water. Usually the instructions say to only make up enough for the day and throw away what isn't used that day. Some people put it in a spray bottle and spray it on the baby's bottom, so that way the wipes aren't sitting all day in it. (We use it in a spray bottle for our little ones)

I don't think I've ever seen any with a preservative in it and I'm thinking that adding a preservative would actually turn most crunchy mommies off to using the solution, since most are looking for a more natural wipe than what's in the stores.

Always add a preservative to anything with water in it; especially for something used on babies. I know there are lots of recipes on the net for "natural" baby wipes, but they are asking for trouble. Anything with water in a room temp will grow nasties really fast. It might turn the "crunchy" mommies off, but they are not professional B&B formulators like people here on this forum.
Most of us know better.

I second that it will grow MANY nasties, especially psuedomonales. These little guys love to thrive in personal care products and can cause UTIs and bladder infections.

Thanks everyone! I'm seeing all these natural recipes and my red flags flew up instantly. A friend is asking, so I want to get as much info as I could for her.

Here's another question: if a professional baby wash that has preservative in it is added to a recipe of water and olive oil, would there be enough preservative to combat the nasties? Here's one of the recipes I've found:

2 tablespoons of baby wash, two tablespoons of olive oil and two cups of water. Soak a half roll of paper towels in the liquid and place the wipes in a baby wipes container.

Not sure if this helps, but I used to use some of this Foamy Wipes Wash when I was using cloth nappies: http://www.bubblebubs.com.au/retail/foa ... -wash-c-74

Ingredients: De-mineralised water, potassium soaps of organic olive, coconut, vegetable glycerin, 25% soap content in water, apricot kernel oil and fragrance.

Luckily my memory is so shoddy then haha. I think I ended up throwing out 3/4 of the concentrated bottle when I moved. I always used just water with my bubs - helped having a 22,500 liter water tank :)

I'm surprised they are allowed to sell it then, if it's capable of growing nasties. Given where you're putting it, especially on girls :o

I guess I'm still not clear on this point: If a professional baby wash that has preservative in it is added to that recipe of water and olive oil, would there be enough preservative to combat the nasties?

Perhaps it depends upon ratio? I'm guessing that you wouldn't know how much preservative is in any given amount of baby wash, so you wouldn't know in any case. Right? Just want to make sure I will convey the right information.
