Teach Soap

I made a batch of soap last night and mixed some oats through for exfoliating. I noticed it was gelling, but decided to leave it as I've yet to make a fully gelled batch so far, and this one was made with guys in mind (testing NG Beer scent) so I figured darker would be fine.

I've just cut it up, and it looks like my oats got cooked! While the beer scent is strong (bleugh, I hate beer lol!), the inside looks 'mushy' in the sense that the oats are soft, not hard like the batch I made the other day that didn't gel.

Did gelling cook my oats? And if so, will they harden up and be exfoliating again?

Unless you used steel cut oats, most oats will cook in gelled soap and soften. The beer scent should cure out to more of a hoppy smell. Next time don't gel.

Hehe yeah, that's what I thought. I just needed someone to confirm it. Oh well lol. I didn't think it would gel, but then I forgot that my goat's milk curdled (impatience coming in again), and I chucked it out to use Water instead. So the soap would have run warmer (as my goat's milk is normally frozen). Will the oats harden up at all? Or have I lost the scrubby effect?

Goat's milk has natural sugars which makes it harder if you don't want the soap to gel. As far as the oats, they won't harden up. They're cooked now.

Bugger, I had hoped they were like wheetbix that go like cement when you leave them out lol. Oh well, another lesson learned

They should still be nice for the skin! Less exfoliating but still nice and soothing! =)
