Okay, so I'm a little confused on this particular topic, so I thought I'd ask all you lovely people for your opinions!

I have seen people put chocolate in soap... but wouldn't that be not good to do because there's sugar in it or something? (Does bitter chocolate not have sugar?) Or is it okay to use it as an additive without having to worry about something silly like that? Also, what's a good amount to use?

Thanks everyone!

Just as long as you keep an eye on the soap and it doesn't overheat, chocolate is fine in soap. Don't use too much though, otherwise you could end up with brown lather and stained washcloths.

Depends on what kind of chocolate you use. If you use unsweetened baking chocolate, there won't be any sugar.

It would be really hard for me to part with my dark chocolate to use in soap!

I have used cocoa butter in soap but not solid chocolate. I do use cocoa powder for lines and or coloring. It does stain a wash cloth but washes out in the laundry in my experience.

Maetessa, I was just at the candy store and refrained from buying both of these plus the lemon filled choc! I think you should make a batch of each...they sound so good.

Thread bump - who doesn't like talking about chocolate?

For my next soap, I was thinking of using NG almond scent but also adding some chocolate just to jazz it up and try something new (HA - four batches and I already have to do something 'new'...I'll wonder if there is something wrong with that later).

I want to add the chocolate 'kick' to a palm oil-free recipe from Lovin' Soap Blog. I made the rookie mistake of not melting my whole bucket of palm oil the first 2 batches, and I simply don't have the motivation to round up a dozen plastic containers to do the 'melt and divide' right now. In fact, I may never use palm oil again for purely selfish reasons - my laziness is THAT profound at times.

My source for adding chocolate is this recipe from Mystic Mountain Sage:

Breaking down this recipe - for one pound of oils add: 1/4 oz dark chocolate & 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder.

Any comments on this ratio of oils to ''choco-additives"? Too much? Too little?

Can barely wait until I can move on to adding PEANUT BUTTER!! I just about fell off my chair when I realized I could add peanut butter to soap. I am thinking Lime-Cilantro FO + Ginger FO + peanut butter!

Raise your hand if you have made Reese's Peanut Butter Cup soap - I will kiss your feet in adoration.

Please don't go by "cups". It's not an accurate method. 1 Tbsp cocoa powder for that size batch will most likely create brown suds. For that size batch, You will need 6 ozs. of water and 2.2 ozs. of lye for a 10% superfat. (or 2.29 ozs. of lye for a 7% superfat). I would also soap lower; at around 110 degrees.
