Teach Soap

Soapbuddy I know you are the Queen of no-gel soaping so this question is for you and of course anyone else that would love to help:) I have been making most of my soap no-gel, I place in the freezer after pouring but I always get what looks like ash or freezer burn on the tops and have to rub off. What am I doing wrong??? I do not cover and I pour at around 100 degrees. Thanks!

Hi Selena! I'm not soapbuddy, but I will tell you that ash is normal. If you use distilled or filtered water, that may help some. Covering your soap with plastic cling wrap can also help stop ash from forming.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

I cover the top with wax paper or cling wrap. Sometimes my pure lavender soap will ash anyway.

I looked for the answer in the other thread about gelling, but couldn't find it. So here is the question...

TO GEL or NOT TO GEL that is the question What is the benefits to gelling or not gelling? I did see posts saying some people force no-gel and also some posts saying some recipes gel and some don't, depending on oil used.

You can mist a good layer of 91% rubbing alcohol on top to avoid ash. This trick works 90% of the time. Some FO are just very prompt to ash, even if I spray twice I'll still get some.

Thanks everyone, I did not think you could get ash if you did not gel. I always cover when I do gel to help avoid or reduce ash, now I know to do the same with no-gel silly me. Also thanks for the tip on spraying the aclcohol prior to avoid, I use after to get rid of but this of course would be better.
