Teach Soap

I was wondering what type of container you use to mix your lye in. I've used glass Ball jars, (cracked), Anchor glass measuring cup (cracked), plastic dishwasher safe pitcher (just cracked). No what?

I use a stainless steel bowl.

I use a Rubbermaid plastic pitcher

NEVER mix your lye in glass! Heavy duty plastic or stainless steel will work.

I use a heavy-duty plastic (polypropylene, 5 PP) pitcher to mix my lye solution.

Where do you get a "heavy duty" plastic container? I thought I had one but it cracked, too!

I got my plastic pitcher at the Dollar General, too. Some grades of plastics are better suited for mixing lye than others. Polypropylene is supposed to be highly resistant to chemicals and heat. Look on the bottom of the container for a triangle with a "5" inside of it and the letters "PP" underneath - that's the recycling code for polypropylene.
