If I have a 3 lb mold to fill, when I am in soapcalc, do I want my oils to total 48 oz. or do I need a total of 48 oz. that includes my water? Is my recipe suppose to be even less to allow for more room in the mold?
Told you it was dumb

Also will this % of olive oil be difficult to trace?

Olive Oil 20 oz.
Palm Oil 16 oz.
Coconut 12 oz.
Lye 6.82
Water 18.24

I've been trying to find a basic recipe that has a good INS but less that 30% coconut oil like Soapbuddy said it won't be too drying.
I plugged these oil amounts in soapcalc and it gave me the amounts of lye and water.

Jeannine :D

I would measure your mold. Length x width x height x 0.4 should give you how many ounces your mold will hold including water. Obviously if you do any type of a water discount, that would give you a smaller batch, so you would need to account for that. I'm not home right now, so I can't check your calculations.

Hi Jeannine! I ran your recipe through soapcalc - it looks like you are only superfatting at 5%. If you went to 7% SF the lye amount would be 6.67 ounces. the water amount would remain the same.

I always figure my recipes based on oil weight; for my 2# mold I'll use 32 oz of oils, even though I will have more than 32 oz of soap batter when the lye solution is added. I keep a small container handy for the excess batter - it makes 2 extra bars of soap to for me to keep! :D

Sweetpea, If you are not opposed to animal fat - take a drive to walmart and get a tub of lard. It is a great repacement for that palm oil. But you will still need to run the receipe through a soap calculator. I love my lard soaps!

I just might do that Susie. Great idea! Even if it's not my first choice, I sure need the practice.
Thanks so much,

Jeannine

While at Walmart you might check the Crisco also, I hear the new Crisco is mostly palm oil. It is also listed on soapcalc for it's properties.

Mella ,is there a new Crisco on the market? It would be GREAT to not have to order palm oil.
