I know in CP soaps when you superfat you never really don't know how much or which of the superfat oils are coming through unless you add them after trace. Is it the same with HP soaps? After HP soap has saponified my book says stir to cool down the mixture then add fragrance. Is there a certain temp. it needs to be? Does anyone have experience with this?

With HP soaps, you can add the superfatting oils or butters after the cook. As far as fragrance, you want one that has a higher flash point so it doesn't flash off.

And to be honest in CP- you don't know what the lye will eat even if you add in at trace. I always add everything up front- not sure where "superfatting" at trace came in and who started that.

Anyway- HP is you add it after the cook- the oils will retain benefits.

Superfating at trace is an old wife's tale that has lingered too long.

I've read that all lye molecules have partnered with base oils to saponify leaving the oils at trace as they are. I find your comments surprising. So what is your theory, Irena? I've read two old books from the library and looked up alot of info. on the net: there is so much to learn..... I do prefer answers from experienced soapmakers. Thank you, ladies. :)

Hi Carol? Is that your name? I'm trying HP soap today. The hardest thing is to decide on a recipe. I create my own using soapcalc.net and keep playing with the numbers till i get the qualities in the soap that i want. I do more study and planning than i do making soap. The anticipation of making soap sustains me longer. It's part of the addiction. One of the CP books is called The Soapmakers Companion Book by Susan Millercavitch and the HP book i can't remember. I've made body butter and bath salts for instant gradification and for a kind of warm up before attempting CP soap. So now i'm trying to make a decision on if i prefer HP to CP soap. Do you like the way your HP soap looks after unmolding? Is it smooth like CP soap or a little lumpy? I have lots of experimenting to do and i'll keep u posted. I want to hear about yours too.

Well having only done M&P for the last 4or5 years I have to say I will miss useing some of my more intricate molds, but there are HP recipies useing more solid at room temp oils so you get an easier release. I have a book that i bought with my Bramble berry supplies just tailored for HP soap which has tons of info and recipes which are very tweekable to your own oils (run through the calc of course) one of the contributors is TJ and I know she has some things posted on the BB blog ,maybe someone here would know exactly where to look. The soaps I've made so far are not as smooth as my M&P and have read not as smooth as you would get from CP,but they are nice ,and I don't mind the slightly rougher look ,the bubbles are awesome. I posted a picture of one a soap from my first batch in the CP section (show of your stuff on page 102,I will paint the tops to bring out the pattern if I have to as you can see they came out better than I expected. Good Luck Carolyn :D

Your answer makes sense. I need to get a better book and more experience. You're a great help. Thanks Irena. :D

[coloHey Carolyn, Saw your soap and it was beautiful. How long does the paint last? I've been looking for an architectural item like an old metal door knob to stamp my soap with. Do HP soaps stamp well? How much time do i have before it gets really hard?=#400080][/color]
