It looks like it overheated to me too. There is no need to add Vit. E. It will get eaten up by the lye.

Irena, do you think i should refrigerate or freeze the soap? And when do i do that? How does the no gel stage work? Thanks for all your responses. I can't wait to try this again!

I agree that it looks like it overheated. Working with milk is very tricky. I usually either freeze the entire amount of milk until it is slushy and then add the lye to that, or I use powdered goat's milk blended into my oils. I prefer the powdered because I've had less problems working with it. If you can find a copy of Anne L. Watson's book on milk soapmaking, it is very helpful!

Good luck on your next batch!

Thanks Linda. I certainly will check that book out. I have (the soapmaker's companion by Susan Miller Cavitch) it has a very short explaination on milk soap procedures.

Just be careful of partial gel (which doesn't bother some but drives me crazy). If you put it in the fridge/freezer leave it in there for a good long time, at least 18hrs IMO, maybe longer. I took one batch out too soon and let it sit on the counter for a few hours ... I think it warmed up a bit and caused partial gel in the center.

Does the freezing cut down on the curing time?

Jilly, no, using the oven, fridge or freezer will not decrease the needed 4-6 weeks cure time.

Made another batch of can goats milk soap yesterday. I heated oils and lye to 100*. Made this in my garage. We were going to have a 102 temp day in texas so after pouring in mold i brought it to my closet. I didn't insulate it. Today after 21 hrs i took soap out of mold and the bottom looked like it was still in gel state with edges lighter, center darker. The top of the soap (except for the slight ash) looked perfect. Is my soap still saponifing or did something go wrong? I used slab mold this time. The temp in garage and my closet was about a 5* difference. [/srsize]

I am wondering if what you are discribing is partial gel... are you able to post a photo? Is the soap firm, you were able to unmold, are you able to cut it?

[/img]ImageThis is underneath. What is partial gel? Will it be ok? Top part of soap looks fine. Its firm enough to cut but is it ready?
The pic is kind of small, but that looks like a partial gel. Nothing wrong with that. It's just an aesthetic issue. Give it a nice cure of 4 to 6 weeks and it will make a fine soap.
