Hello, I am new and this is my very first question... I know you cannot make a soap without the "lye" / sodium hyrdoxide... but I would like to know if this "soap" is an actual soap based on the ingredients listed on this bar of soap:

SODIUM PALMATE
SODIUM PALM KERNELATE
WATER/EAU
PARFUM/FRAGRANCE
THEOBROMA CACAO (COCOA) SEED BUTTER
BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER
CAMELLIA SINENSIS LEAF EXTRACT
SODIUM CHLORIDE
GLYCERIN
TETRASODIUM EDTA
TETRASODIUM ETIDRONATE

Which ingredient made it an actual soap or is it not an actual soap?

Yes it's actual soap. They are using terms after the soap has been saponified. That's why you see the "ate" after the word in the ingredient list. If this is a commercial bar, which is what it looks like, each saponified ingredient can be added separately, so when they are combined there is no lye present. All soaps start with lye though; no lye, no soap! :D The naturally occuring glycerin is taken out, so it doesn't gum up the commercial rollers. Some glycerin is then added back in, as you can see from the ingredient list.

Thanks Irena! :) I wanted to add... what do you mean by "detergent-free" soaps and "soap-free" soaps?

Also, what specific ingredients should I look for to make sure the soap is a "melt and pour" base? I am just scavanging hunt some old soaps in my house so I can experiment on them before using the melt and pour soap bases I bought. :D

Commercial soap like this will not melt as easy as MP base. It will most likely get chunky. When MP base melts it's a liquid. I wouldn't bother with the commercial bar. "Detergent-free" soaps and "soap-free" soaps are usually made with synthetic surfactants. Have you ever seen a soap free cleanser? It lathers, but there is no real soap in it because it's made with surfactants instead. Those old soaps around your house simply won't work the same way due to the ingredients.

If you take a look at BrambleBerry's web site, they list their ingredients for the MP base right on their web site. http://www.brambleberry.com/Clear-Melt- ... P3189.aspx
