 Post subject: Oh No! Is it wrecked?

Crap! I just made my first batch of soap with Palm Oil, and OF COURSE I forgot to melt down the palm oil on it's own first. Is my soap ruined? additionally I was making yogurt soap and my soap turned like an orange colour, I'm not sure if that means its wrecked either? Any ideas?

It will most likely be fine, even though you didn't stir the palm. How big of a batch was it? How big is the container of palm oil? Yogurt has natural sugars, that's why it turned orange. The color should tone down to tan once cured.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure it's wrecked. Not only is it still dark orange the next day but yesterday after it traced I put it in the mold which was a silicone mold. It didn't hold the shape super well which I wasn't expecting. And as I looked at it all the oils seeped out the top! They didn't mix in at all. So I panicked and scooped it out into a different mold but now its all clumpy and not at all Tan. Argh. Plus I think it smells funny. How do I know if it overheated, which is what I suspect happened. How do I know if rebatching can save it?

It smells funny due to the milk from the yogurt. If it overheated, you can try to rebatch, but it might be at the point that rebatching might not work. If it was just a small batch, I wouldn't waste any more time or ingredients and just chuck it and chalk it up to experience.

I find my milk soaps always smell a bit but after a bit they smell great. Make sure you freeze your milk or yogurt some before mixing in with lye, then it won't overheat. Goodluck.
