Holy crap, did that sting! Here is the soap

Image

Here is the recipe

10oz Avocado oil
40oz Olive oil
6.25 lye (converted to grams since my scale is not get that exact)
16.5 oz water
sf 7%

I poured the raw soap into to different pringles cans. The first one, no problem. The second one seemed a little wet on top. The wax coating from the actual pringles can also separated and it was stuck to the parchment paper. There is those white specks throughout each bar. I did the zap test on the soap in the first can and no zap...but it didn't taste like soap either. Tasted like funky olive oil. The other end of the second log of soap did not zap either.

I unmolded the soap just shy of 24 hours and it was very hard. Much harder than I would have thought an 80% olive oil soap would be.

OMG..so I just ran my numbers through some gram to ounces calculators and apparently BB's app is off. BB says that the lye should be at 6.25 lye or 188 grams. I just used the google conversion calculator and it says that 188 grams is 6.63 ounces. I want to cry now.

Can you recalculate your recipe and add more oil so it's not lye heavy? Then you can rebatch.

I just ran your numbers through soapcalc as well and it says that the 7% sf for this batch would be 6.273 oz lye which is 177.8 grams. Also, next time you could probably use a little less water, too. I've been soaping my olive oil soaps at a 2.4:1 ratio and it still takes a long time for them to get hard.
If you did use 188 grams you'll be more around a 1.5% sf, so you're still not completely SOL'd on the soap... give the one that zaps a couple more days and try the zap test again. I had one that zapped me 2 days after unmolded but was fine on the 3rd day ^_^

edit: BTW, the soap looks very lovely!

At 1.5% sf will the soap be drying?

If you switch the calculator between ounces and grams, the calculator will change all the measurements to metric and round up so in this case, it will change the Olive Oil to 1.2 kg, the Avocado Oil to 300 grams, and the lye and the water go up a bit as well. So in this case, 1200 grams of Olive Oil (42.24 ounces), 300 grams of Avocado Oil and 190 grams of Lye is a 6-7% superfat. Just to be on the safe side, I ran that through The Sage as well as the BB calculators =)))

If you soaped in ounces and then only looked at the final recipe in grams for the lye and not the oils, your recipe will have a lower superfat.

This is because of the way the calculator rounds for grams. So, when you're soaping, keep it in imperial (ounces) or metric (grams) and never the two shall meet or be used interchangeably. =)

You can add extra oils to rebatch this out if it's feeling drying to your skin. I soap with low superfats and don't have an issue with it but my skin is pretty tough! =)

I wish I would have known that. It did change all the ingredients but I don't know the ounce to gram conversion off the top of my head. I was using the android app and it looks like it was just converting the units. I don't understand why it would round up though since I had a finished weight plugged in.

Newbie question, what is a zap test exactly? I want to make sure it is what I think it is(saw online on a YouTube video).

Thnx,
Debbie :D

When should this zap test be preformed?
