HAHAHA! Dave, your siggy quotes rock. I seriously look forward to them. Hehe.
My take on the scent thing: labeling matters. So if it says "unscented" then people don't have a "preconceived" expectation of scent.
I had one soap with coffee in it and ONLY scented it with peppermint EO. Well, one of my testers said she liked the subtle scent of the coffee smell. Um, it's near impossible to smell the coffee - not even the grinds - in a cp soap. If it's there it's sooooo subtle.
So folks are extremely suggestible. I don't say this to insult consumers but to point out that this is just human nature. We see/believe/hear/feel and yeah, probably SMELL what we want to

'Nuther example: my sister went goo-goo-ga-ga for this "oatmeal and honey soap" she got from a crafter in BC. It was scented with a musk/floral fragrance! Smelled NOTHING like oatmeal and honey.
It's all subjective, but I think labeling/communication/education matters to the end experience a consumer/tester will have.
In customer service/marketing we'd call it "managing expectations." =)
