Okay weird title I know, but wasn't really sure what else to put it as haha.

So I just got a little delivery of some sandalwood and cedarwood eo's. I've only been making soap for about a month and am still experimenting with scents I'm not familiar with, and wanted to look at some recommended manly scents.

I don't know if it's because I'm a girl and it's supposed to be a man smell, but does anyone else think sandalwood smells really really horrible? and cedarwood?! ... that's got to be the funkiest funk ever! So I was wondering if I bought the wrong variety? I wasn't aware when purchasing, but the sandalwood is actually a blend with amyris and the cedarwood seems to be an 'atlas' variety. Is this why I don't like them? Everyone seems to rave about them so I'm wondering if I've just not smelt the best stuff?!

Does anyone else agree that these stink or am I on my own here haha. Are there any smells you guys don't like but other people seem to love?

Lara

Hi, Lara. I really like both sandalwood and cedarwood. It's funny how everyone's nose is different. One person will love one fragrance, and someone else will come along and hate the same fragrance. I think patchouli is one of those scents that you either love or hate. I love straight patchouli - my mom absolutely hates it. :D

Amyris is the poor man's Sandalwood. I prefer the real, undiluted EO. Amyris to me smells nothing like pure Sandalwood. I didn't care for the Atlas variety either. I'm not home right now. I'll add to my post which one I have when I get home.

Many fragrances do not smell nice from the bottle but are wonderful in soap.

Hmm patchouli is another one I'm not so familiar with but have heard lots of people rave about it. I guess I'll have to buy that one to see what it's like! *fingers crossed I'll like it!*

"Amyris is the poor man's Sandalwood"

- hahaha that made me laugh so much! Yeah I had no idea it was a blend when I bought it, which is a bit of a shame. Do you think plain sandalwood smells quite different?

Funnily enough I let my boyfriend smell both those eo's and he thought they were okay ... maybe my nose is just particularly hateful towards them, everyone else seems to find them either tolerable or amazing! weird!

I HATE atlas cedarwood... this was the first cedarwood that I bought too and, I agree, it is awful. I don't even want to blend it with anything. Personally, I prefer virginia cedarwood...smells like a cedar chest and makes really beautiful blends :)

I have virginia cedarwood (from BB) as well and while I wouldn't want to smell just like it, it does smell nice blended with other EOs, especially if you're seeking something a little more rugged/masculine. It smells just like you'd expect a piece of cedar to smell ... in a good way! (Try lavender/cedarwood which is a nice herbacious blend.)

The REAL, honest-to-god Indian sandalwood EO is, in my opinion, one of the finest EO fragrances, if not my very favorite.
It is, of course, now exceedingly expensive --- on the order of $200 per ounce.

Now that would be a batch I would hate to have go wrong! And I don't think I would be giving much of that soap away :|
