Teach Soap

So another concoction I'm working on (oh so many!): want to make a beautiful dark pink rosehip soap.

I have the rosehip tea infusion already (the water is a deep pink color, sorta like the flesh of pink grapefruit).

I also tried making an OO infusion with the dried rosehips but it did not color the oil at all. I've read rosehips are NOT oil soluble. Should I use the OO (strained) anyway? Will it have picked up some of the rosehip scent?

I also made some finely ground rosehip powder for either extra color or a sprinkle on top of the soap.

AND I've got rosehip oil in my cabinet.

So more questions:

1) Will ANY of this come through scent-wise in the soap? Reason I ask is that I'm considering using some EOs for fragrance but I do NOT want to do that if they're going to mask/override an already beautiful scent of rosehip. Yet I know the cold process could ruin the rosehip scent anyway...

2) And what percentage should I use the rosehip oil without making the soap too soft or prone to rancidity? I don't want to douse my recipe with more than necessary.

I'm going to make this soap with a new recipe I'm starting to settle on and use shea instead of cocoa butter, and a little rosehip oil subbed for some of the OO.

Hey Irena,

Yeah ... erm, I just realized about the brown. LOL. Made a batch this morning (had to take the window when I could get it). That said, I used a cedarwood/grapefruit EO blend with a titch of lemongrass and it smells wonderful ... so the carmel-ly color should look okay with that smell (I hope!).

Sigh.

Learning the hard way these days aren't I?

I suppose I coulda add some of the rosehip powder to make it more pinkish brown but too late!

So I cut this one last night and at first the brown was kind of an ugly color (greenish/yellowish undertones), but as the soap dries out a bit the brown is turning more to a pinkish/cool toned brown and really quite nice!

Yeah that was actually in part where I got the inspiration from. I love his stuff!

Here's a really quick pic (link below) I just took to show the color. The soap on the left is from the loaf mold and thus fully gelled. The cupcake on the right was poured into a silicone muffin mould and did not gel. Look how different the colors are! I think the photos are a bit misleading because the soap looks a bit "pinker" than it really is. Rocky Top soaps are probably the same ... the rosehip tea just doesn't stay pink

Of course, the EOs may have also contributed to the final color but probably not a lot.

Wow that really is a difference! It may not have come out as you planned but your tops are one of the greatest! Good work.
