Teach Soap

I have been making Hot Process soap for a few months now, whilst I love the soaps I make, I have always hated the lumpy, uneven tops I get and could never cut them off perfectly straight.

Being in the UK, it is not easy to source some of gadgets you can get elsewhere.

Well I finally had a lightbulb over the head moment.

I dug out a cake leveller i had at the back of the cupboard and it did the trick beautifully, a perfectly even top first time!

Does anybody else use this?

I have to tell you that I work to make sure my tops aren't even, Lol. But if even is what you want, the kudoos for your ingenuity! Way to think out of the box! I think all soapers look at ordinary items and try to figure out if they will make good molds, or if they can be used to ceate a good pour. So really, its just your inner soaper that lead you to the cake server! Lol!

Good for you! I like smooth tops as well. I have used a wallpaper seam roller over waxed paper (over the top of the soap in the mold) to get smoother tops.

I made my wooden molds to they have tops that fit INSIDE the mold just so I can smooth the tops down. I don't like the lumpy look too much either. I like nice clean lines.

Hello...I have to say my tops are mostly smooth but I have seen soaps with very lovely rustic/rough tops. Totally a preference thing. I pour at a light enough trace so that it stays smooth most of the time(unless an F.O/E.O. moves things along too fast . I cut my bars and smooth out spots with a piano wire pulled taught between wooden handles. Works great! happy Soaping!

I do some HP soap and I like the rustic tops. Others I know take syran wra and lay it over the tops of their soap and run a spoon or off set frosting knife to smooth the tops of the soap.
