I wanted a particular recipe to be a bit whiter, so I bought some titanium dioxide and started reading up on it. The usage rate varied widely - from 1 tsp per pound of oils to 1/4 tsp PPO...
My batch was only 3 1/2 pounds, so just to be safe, I chose an amount in the middle I used 2 tsp - no effect - NONE. In fact it is actually a bit yellower than this same recipe is WITHOUT the TD.

go figure.

It isn't a bad color, just not what I envisioned.

Which fragrance oil did you use? There is also vanilla stabilizer that can be used in CP soap.

My TD recommends 1 Tablespoon ppo, but as SB said, the amount needed and the final coloring will largely depend upon the color of your oils, and what color, if any, the scent oil(s) contributes. Also, if your scent has vanilla in it or not.

I used gardenia, clear to the eye - vanilla content is listed as 0.00%
The oils were crisco, coconut and castor - should have been whiter.... :?

What I really want, is just ONE recipe to be a white white white bar, so I have a base color to work with when swirling with a pretty pastel.

No palm kernel flakes in my neck of the woods, but from what I understand - that would give me a whiter bar...

I have a friend, long time pro soaper, and she used too much TD once, and the soap chalked big time.
I was trying to avoid that after hearing her horror stories.

Perhaps I erred a bit on the side of caution

Have you tried 100% coconut with 20% superfat? That should give you a blinding white bar. With that said, I have a Gardenia FO that I have to use TD with, but it does chalk up a bit as I use a lot of TD.

Babassu is also a very white fat, but it is more expensive than the coconut. I have never soaped gardenia so I cant tell you my experience there, but if SB says it makes her less white, then I would have to say its partly the fo. The coconut soap is what we make the salt bars from and they are very, very white. Didn't you do one of those recently Kat? Did you like the look? You could always do a small batch of the coconut to swirl into your regular recipe.
