I would assume they did straight stripes of color across the soap and then took their swirling stick and ran it perpendicular to the colored stripes

So... you have your base color (white) poured into your mold. Then you alternate your colors pouring a straight stripe of each going in one direction:

--------------------
--------------------
--------------------


And then using your stick or what have you, you run it perpendicular to the stripes

| | | | | |
| | | | | |

And that should get you that type of swirl

Sorry, He Man and the Masters of the Universe! DS used to watch that show, he used to run around with a plastic sword in the back of his shirt so he could be He-man. Don't tell him I told you!

Oh man, I was way off on my 80s trivia. Darn! I shoulda known that one. My husband was a He-Man fanatic when he was a kid.

Now if you wanna talk Flinstones ... or Giligan's Island....

No, those stripes were done with a different process (you can see that they don't match up with the stripes on the top of the soap)... I've been going over this in my head trying to think of how they got the deep lines in the soap, but the only solution I can come up with is too far fetched (maybe- did a double pour of this soap, the first being the deep lines just a simple layering of the bar, and then cut and laid end to end with a second pour on top to produce the swirled stripes)... My above description was just for how the top swirls were created, not the deep color penetration...

And yes, He-Man rocked when I was a kid. I remember watching it with my cousins when my Grandma babysat us and then we would go run out in the yard play acting the episode we saw! ^_^;;
