Anybody use/sell wooden soap dishes with their CP Soaps?

I purchased a lot of 50 from an Etsy seller. They were quite nice but I was suprised when I began using them and found my soap had discolored. Also, a brown stain is running down from the dish. I have only used them about a week now so don't know if this is something that will go away with time or not. I have used wooden soap dishes before and did not have this problem. But they were ones that I purchsed individually here or there. I contacted the seller who advised that it is the natural wood properties reacting with the soap and would not harm the soap. Still yet, who wants a brown stain on their beautiful soaps? Not to mention the sink? Any experience with this?

I've never used a wood soap dish before but I'm thinking maybe the brown is from the wood stain for color? Maybe the dish is not sealed and water proof?

Wooden soap dishes should really be sealed before use. If they were stained, some of the stain can come off as it gets wet or sits in a humid environment like the shower.

I use wooden soap dishes that I made myself. My brother-in-law, who helped me, had me only use pine so it would not stain either the soap or the sink. My dishes are neither stained or sealed.

A light colored wood, Pine, Maple.. will not stain. The Ph of soap can cause darker woods to bleed. Also, unless it is redwood or cedar, the wood will eventually rot. Get a can of clear finish from your hardware store. Once the finish cures it will be water proof.

woodcraft will help you in selecting the correct finish. Beware some finishes require you to scuff sand prior to second coats.

None of the cheep imports are finished. I carry exotic, woods, everything from waterfall bubinga to cocobolo, among others, as well as hard maple, oak, cherry, and walnut that I make myself.

Hopefully I will have these up on my website if anyone is interested.

The dishes that I purchased are not stained or sealed. They are made from various hardwoods. After reading this I realize that the other ones that I own are pine, so that explains my not having this problem with them. I have read that the wood should not be sealed as that too can affect the soaps. So confusing! I was looking for an inexpensive way for people to care for their soaps. I shudder when I visit someone whom I have given my soap to and see it all squishy in a regular soap dish! It is impossible to find a "draining soap dish" in my area. Pottery ones are nice but too costly if you need many, or, like me, plan to give some away. A local craftsman is making some for me but they are not cheap. With this being said, I am bummed out over my 50 lot of soap dishes! Any body need some soap dishes for brown soap? : )

Ken, they are not supposed to be imported. I want handmade. I would be intersted in looking at your web site. Can you post the address?

You can use this spray to seal your dishes

Also more info on Lacquer can be found on

I am hoping to have my website up by this weekend. Send me a PM and I will notify you when it is up and running.

Thank you, Ken. I'll take a look at this link and may give it a try. I'm not really into wood crafts but a at this point it may save those soap dishes and make them usable! Another lesson learned!

Why is it that experience is something we get AFTER we need it? Hummm...

Although they are not very attractive I have bought 'rubber' soap dishes at the Dollar Store. They have little points the soap sits on and holes for it to drain. I often just give them away especially to someone new to handmade soap
