FarmScrapedGoods, My post was not directed toward you specifically. I used the example that you did because a LOT of people believe it should be banned and hold it as an example of a killer just waiting to be poured.
Of course your choice is your choice, no matter your reasoning. I could have, and almost did, go on to discuss rosemary. But as I said, I am writing a book and didn't want to print a whole chapter of it here.
I do not feel your post is misleading at all. But a lot of people are mislead and do not know the facts. When you know the facts you can make informed decisions, but when you make decisions based on misinformation then you are really being forced into your choice, and that is not right. Thant is my point.

LavenderLady,
Just trying to make my point more clear. After I re read my post it did sound sort of doom and gloom, I wanted to convey my reasoning. My apology was for just that, not being more clear. I am no expert, and made a choice I feel good about. I agree with you 100%, all it takes is one bad apple, and I don't wish to be that apple. I don't feel it should be pulled off the shelves in the least bit. I look towards the future when I may use wintergreen at some point, as education and opinion are a constant growth for me. I may feel more confident to use it one day, and that would be great.

As someone else stated as well, some of the "scary" effects of EOs are few and far between, that I believe finding a balance between the facts, opinions, and personal choice is important to produce a good product. For personal use, and sales as well.

I do look forward to your book. Love your posts and am thankful for the info you share around here. :)

I must admit that while I would not hesitate to make a wintergreen-scented soap for my own personal use (and have already in fact bought some Sweet Birch EO just for this purpose ---- while it is still available), given the potential toxicity of wintergreen/sweet birch oils, particularly the potential complexities involved with its use in combination with other salicylate-containing products as well as with aspirin, I would be VERY reluctant to make such a product for sale.

So which EOs are we avoiding for soap?

I have this book called "Natural Health" by: Nerys Purchon which I like very much. There is a section on herbs and essential oils and it has a lot of information on many different plants. What i find a little confusing is that most (even lavender) are not recommended for use by pregnant women. As someone who really tries to do my research and make good decisions based on what i can find, this book kind of got to me. I assume this means at full concentration but I am not qualified to determine what dosage is safe (even in soap) and I am wondering if it's only at full strength that this "XYZ oil" is dangerous or just in general which I find really hard to believe if it's just in general because there would be a lot more pregnant women in danger if that was the case i think.......

Any thoughts? I am really trying to figure out if i need to label all my soaps with essential oils or not, how does everyone handle this?

thanks
Erin

I like Martin Watt's "Essential Oil Monographs", He also has "Natural Beauty", but I'm not familiar with that one. You can get them as a download from him.
