Teach Soap

I need to find a new lye vendor. I was using Essential Depot for awhile and have had good experiences with them. But recently i went to place an order and my shipping costs came out to be more than my order total. Um, I don't think so. I have emailed them twice to see if there is a glitch in their system or something and have not heard from them so I just need to move on at this point.

Has anyone else had any problems with them lately?

Who are you all using at the moment?

I hate to not point out that you can buy lye from BB, but if you search the forum you will see several on the various lye companies that we use and the ones we feel are best. Seems to me the last one, not that long ago, was about bad things with ED. But at any rate, look it up and you will see a few recommendations that may work for you.

I am curious as to what the average cost (including shipping) is. I buy local and my cost went up 4 cents per oz. I know that is not alot and I do not make pounds and pounds of soap but mostly just curious. At present I am paying 28cents per oz.

I've been using Essential Depot and haven't had a problem. I've been ordering 10# at a time and have always gotten it within 3-4 days. I checked into AAAchemical and the cost was almost the same as it was from ED. My last order of lye from ED came to 23 cents/oz including shipping charges. There's only one place locally that carries lye and it is about 50 cents/oz.

Well mine was just raised too, and it is now 10 cents an ounce plus shipping, which makes it about 18 cents an ounce (less when I order more, but I always figure on the least amount that I will order). Last order it was 10 cents an ounce total.

Ok, so this brings me to my next question _citymouse I hope you don't mind me butting in your thread_ how much supply do you keep on hand? Enough for 3 months, 5 months or more? I have tended to keep as little as I could just because of the nature of this chemical.

I just purchased from the lye guy and if you buy 5 the 6th bottle is free so i went with that. The prices seemed reasonable and he's in Syracuse so it won't be dreadfully long via fedex ground. I usually buy about that each time and it will lasts me for a couple of months. I have been getting busier (yay!) so i may have to order more at a time, but I don't have children and I have a safe space that i keep this stuff so it's away from the kitties etc.

Since I dont have space (I downsized a few years ago) to store the barrels anymore, I only buy a 1 month supply at a time. I generally go through a minimum of 12 pounds a month, in my higher production months I will easily triple that, so depending what month it is, I just order in what I expect to use. Then I dont have storage issues, but I am subject to price fluctuations for sure. Before I moved here I always bought in bilk for the money saving aspect of it, plus it really didnt take long to use it all either!

Tammy, 12# in one month?! I use maybe a little less than 1# per month, depends if I have to work alot or if we go on vacation then I make less soap. So I will check out the lye vendors next time, but I'll bet at my small amout it will still be best to buy it local. I am thinking that to store more than 4 months worth might not be such a good idea.
