Teach Soap

I used ylang ylang oil in a CP soap a few weeks ago. At first I thought it smelled horrible! But the scent seems to have mellowed out a bit. Is ylang ylang a scent that really should be mixed with something else? Or do people generally like it on its own? It's a new scent to me. I don't think I've ever smelled it before and purchased it blindly.

I don't care for it on its own, but I like it in blends. If you go to Rainbow Meadow fragrance calculator and input a couple of essential oils, it will give you some blend ideas.

I'll try it! I was thinking maybe it was just me not liking the smell. And I didn't want to NOT make it if everyone else liked it!

I've noticed the higher grade Ylang ylang EO really smells good and strong and no sharp medicinal notes. I would not use 3rd distill, but 2nd and above is actually sweet. I do not use it alone, usually mixed with lavender, rosewood, sweet orange, clary sage, vetiver, vanilla, or sandalwood.

I happen to LOVE the smell of Ylang ylang, all by itself, but it is intense and I can see where some might be turned off by it (I am a guy, by the way, and don't much like most floral aromas or oils, curiously enough). When I get around to trying my first batch of melt-and-pour soap, I will be eager to make one that is just Ylang ylang by itself.

I mix it with a little bit of patchouli in a body spray that i make for myself. I love it, the sweetness of the ylang ylang and the earthiness of the patchouli, it really seems to balance out for me.
