Has anyone used Crisco in their soap? If so what did you think about it? Any basic recipes with it? I happen to have some left over from a different thing and I also have olive oil, castor oil, apricot oil, coconut oil, and lard and was thinking of giving it a go.

I haven't personally, but a friend of mine did and she loves it. Says it makes a hard bar similar to tallow soap. Give it a shot!

I wonder if anyone has a basic recipe. When using a lye calc what would I put it under?

I have used both the old Crisco and the new Crisco in soap, along with coconut oil and rice bran oil. It makes good soap. SoapCalc has both the old and new Crisco as options.

There is a choice on SoapCalc for Crisco also the "new Crisco" which is the one with palm Oil in the mix!!

Ive used Crisco before and it works well--I've also soaped with walmart shortning too--it works great also. They are listed as oils on Soapcalc.

My soap made with the WM Great Value Shortening (Beef Tallow & Palm) came out really well and it lathers and feels just like my lard soap so I'm a very happy camper since it's about half the cost of lard!

I'm also experimenting now with using soy and canola oils in place of some of my olive oil to cut down costs. So far, so good. This is sooo much fun! :lol:

ljm, the shorting at walmart is tallow??? I had gone to our walmart and asked if they carried any tallow and was told no! Guess not everyone at that store knows what is going on. I will have to take a look when I get out to that area again. Thanks for the heads up!

Walmart may carry both the tallow/soy combination and the all vegetable oil shortening. Ours used to carry both.
