Hello Everyone:
I have spent the last month or so getting ready to start making soap, slowly getting all the supplies and equipment that I need, reading and seeing tutorials etc. The day has finally come to put all this together and start making some soap, but I still have questions  Melt & Soap seems to be the easiest but are there any rules I should know, for instance the quantities of the soap bases? If I add oils to it is there a ratio? I know with CP you have to be very precise and use the soap calculators but I want to know if for MP quantities are as crucial.

Welcome :)

With MP it's pretty hard to mess it up to the point that it's not usable or isn't safe to use. As long as you don't put too much fragrance oil or essential oil in it.

Most people add oils at about 1-2 Tbsp (0.5 - 1 oz ) per lb of mp base. Anything too much over can be make the soap too soft, make it lose it's lather and make it seep oil.

Some other rules for mp:
Don't overheat it
Don't add fresh fruits or vegetables

Have fun experimenting :)

Thank you, I plan to have a lot of fun this weekend. I just finished making my first batch of CP soap and my husband and dog are still alive and doing fine, so I must have followed all the necessary precautions :) . Keep your fingers crossed!. Thanks again for your help

O.K., so I tried some MP and CP soaps yesterday, the CP batch.....so far so good! The MP soaps however came out too oily. I used a recipe I saw on Soapqueen, and I doubled the amount because I was making a larger quantity than on the video. I used 6 oz of Shea MP and 4 oz of Sweet almond oil and I added some ground strawberry seeds (I was making a scrub soap),for 4 bars of soap. But the soaps came out really oily. What should I have done differently, and if I let them dry out longer would that help?

The sweet almond oil is probably the issue. Which recipe were you using?

I think you are right. I misunderstood the scrub for a soap. Can I re-melt the soap and add more MP base and re-pour? It already has fragrance in it, will this mess it up?

I add 1 TBS. of any oil or butter per lb. of MP base. Any more than that and I loose bubbles or it feels oily. You can remelt and add more MP, but be aware that it might be harder to stir all the oil in.

ALSO!!! Don't add too much Vanilla Stabilizer!!! That really ruins the soap and that stuff makes it smell really bad,(when you add too much).

Thank you for all your help. Actually, I didn't any any vanilla stabilizer, I instead used strawberry seeds for the scrubbing part. They look really pretty, (oily but pretty). How long do you usually let MP dry? I know the harder it gets the longer it lasts, but is there an average?
