So that others may learn from our mistakes:

What did I do wrong here: Image

Larger view:

Hint:

I use only Non-Bleeding Oxides, Ultramarines, Clays or Micas (all of which I test).

The person who gets the answer right gets all 8 David soaps which are perfectly usable, just uggie.

The colorant was not thouroughly mixed all the way, leaving the dots of color you see in the soap.

Should mix pigments in a separate container first, then add them to the bulk mix of the melted soap.

I am just guessing here.

I second sammyram's guess! That's something I would do!

I did the same thing actually: Image

But I still sold them!

Here's my wild guess :D You added "more" colorant than you originally anticipated on using or you ran out of what was left in your bottle and you did not mix them both well enough?

Maybe no one has come across this before which is why it was also new to me? Ready for the answer?

I'll spill the beans but you guys have to decide who gets the soap!

Ok here goes:

I suspend powdered oxides, ultramarines, micas etc (anything dry and non-bleeding) in liquid glycerin. Some require extra crushing some don't. Regardless of how finely the grains of color are crushed they ALWAYS remain grains.

So my purple blend, though it was shaken a few times a week for the past two years, I nevertheless have been using the same 1 oz container of for nearly 2 years. As I was squirting out the last of the liquid I noticed this dense layer of color still stuck at the bottom! "Hey" I thought, "I'll just add a bit more glycerin and scrape the bottom of my bottle."

It wasn't good enough for me to add glycerin and shake really well, I had to SCRAPE the bottom which had settled much as sandstone might.

Lesson: DO NOT scrape the bottom of your liquid pigment containers unless you are willing to go through the re-crushing process for that little bit.

Who wins?
