Hi All,
I just received my soap order from BB today!
I bought both packages of Soapylove's scents.
There is a vanilla stabilizer enclosed in each package, but it doesn't state which scents have vanilla in them.
There isn't enough VS to use if all the scents have vanilla in them; so I'm thinking not all of them do.

Does anyone know which scents have vanilla?

Do I use the same amounts as I would with any other FO?

Thanks,
einnoc

I don't have the answer for that question, but it's a VERY good question? I think you have to go through the hassle of e-mailing them and asking them that question. That's one of the things that I don't like when I order FO. I'm not talking about BrambleBerry, but alot of other fragrance companies. They should say on the bottles you purchase if they do or do not have vanilla in them.

Hi Wildchild,
I try to mark my bottles with a V when I first get them; so I always know if the fragrance has vanilla in it & then I don't have to look it up.
I looked up each fragrance under the refill section of SoapyLove on BB. Only the Vanilla Frosting fragrance mentioned the word vanilla.

Thanks,
I think I will have to call them.

Chocolate scents also contain vanilla a lot of the time... I'm not sure what their fruit/candy scents really contain but I know most types of sweets (that we eat) contain vanilla extract, so SoapyLove may have put undernotes of vanilla into their other scents. I would definitely e-mail BB to ask for which scents contain vanilla. You're probably going to have to buy more vanilla stabilizer, unless you want your soaps to purposely turn brown :)

Thank you, tcmatteson,
I just emailed BB and asked.
I also asked about the Cupcake Video and if the cupcake should be sprayed with alcohol before the frosting is put on.

When I find out, I will list the scents and if they have vanilla or not.

I have another question about the whole vanilla thing. If you get percentages from your suppliers as to how much vanilla content is there...do you still just add the same amount of stabilizer per fragrance oil, or do you go by the percentage? I have from 2% down to 0.08% in fragrances with vanilla. I don't know if that needs to be taken into account. So far I have just been adding equal amounts.

Hi Fairy Cute,
That's a really good question!
I use so much vanilla stabilizer. I shake it up and then it's all bubbles and harder to measure.
I'm always afraid I'm not adding enough.
I don't want to have the whole vanilla thing happen again; so I tend to add more!

I would like to know the answer to your question.

Why don't companies that sell fragrances containing vanilla automatically mix the stabilizer in with it? Wouldn't it make sense to just charge a little more and the end user doesn't have to go through the mistake of browning their product? There must be a reason why.

Brambleberry does have one: http://www.brambleberry.com/Vanilla-Non ... P3908.aspx
But they claim that it's not as vanilla smelling as some of their other Vanilla FOs.
And if the companies were to sell the combined mix, you'd technically only be getting half an ounce of fragrance because the other half is the color stabilizer... Plus, I hear that the vanilla stabilizer will only keep the soaps white for a little while. The soap will eventually start to color brown (but I'm not sure how long that process will take).
I personally like the fact that the vanilla can turn brown and I can choose whether or not to add the stabilizer to my soap. I have a couple of soap plans in my head that will take into account all the variations of white to dark brown the soap will take as it turns and (hopefully) still look great wherever the color lands.

What is vanilla stabilizer made of, anyway?

I don't think I have ever seen it listed in any ingredients.

Any of the vanilla stabilizers I've ever seen only says "fragrance" in the ingredients. Some of the suppliers have had it formulated specifically for them by chemists, so not every stabilizer will be the same.
Also, vanilla stabilizers may not work for every fo with vanillin in it. Some suppliers say that on their sites and some don't. Most suppliers have too many fo's to be able to test them all with it.

When you're using it in your soap, you don't change the ratio of it for the percentage of vanillin in the fo. You still use it according to the manufacturers directions, usually 1:1 ratio. But not always, some have different usage amounts, so make sure you're going by what they say.
The percentage of vanillin is listed on there to let you decide if you want to use stabilizer or not. A fo with a small percentage of vanillin will most likely just turn your soap a light tan or a dark cream color.

I personally don't use it very often anymore. Even with it, the soaps will still most likely turn brown if there's vanillin in the fo. Except now instead of it happening sooner, it happens later when the customer's had it for a while. Could you imagine being that customer who's got this pretty soap in their bathroom and then they come in one day and it's brown? :?

Plus, so many other fragrances can change soap colors also. Some will turn it a light yellow, some a light blue, etc. The vanilla stabilizer doesn't work for those fo's.

I've just learned to work with the color changes. This is another reason why it's good to have tested all the ingredients in soap extensively before selling.

Here's the answer from BB concerning the vanilla in SoapyLove's FO:

" In the Candy Jar set, I would recommend using Stabilizer for Pink Strawberry and Tutti Fruity . For the Delectable Desserts set, I would recommend using Stabilizer for the Chocolate Fudge, Vanilla Frosting and Orange Sherbet. As with our other stabilizer, you can use it in equal proportions with your fragrance, although you could probably get away with using less in the Strawberry and Tutti Fruity since there is less vanilla in them."

Does this imply a percentage can be used based on the amount of fragrance? I don't know.
