I made a soap using green clay in purchased in a local health food store, not french, and it turned my soap a gray color, added some green lab color to try to make it green, turned purple :o than gray again :?:

I like it! What type of clay did it say on the package? There are different types of green clays out there.

I have used French Green clay and the soap comes out a lovely subdued shade of green. Perhaps your clay was colored with a dye that didn't stand up to the saponification process.

Yes, I am not sure but will be back at the health food store tomorrow to find out. The women said it was healing green clay and many of her customer's buy it to make mask and for healing puddy??? I mixed some after I made the soap with water and it stay a pale green and made a nice little mask? Thank God the colors all seemed to blend just the same.

The best way to know how the clay will behave in soap, is to make a very small amount of a lye solution, then add your desired clay to it. If it has any unstable colors, those colors will disappear in the lye solution and the clay will turn to some sort of beige or light brown. True green (montmorillonite) clay should stay green. I think illite is the same thing and should stay green in soap as well.
