I watched your lye safety video.
I feel I may still have a accident with the dangerous lye.
I ordered the melt & pour for that reason.
I really wanted to make my own soap from the start but I am so
afraid of the lye.
Is there another way to make a cleaning bar without lye.
I am making it for my personal use.
I am a person who makes mistakes cooking food so I don't want
to hurt anyone with lye.

You could also use BrambleBerry's rebatch base. It's cold process and since it's already saponified, you won't have to worry about lye. With that said, rebatched soap is gloppy and will never be as smooth as cold process soap or MP soap. http://www.brambleberry.com/Rebatch-Bases-C14.aspx

Hi Anne-Marie,

Thank you for making these videos. Being new to soap-making I find them very helpful. Please keep the videos coming.

Hi Anne Marie,

I am trying to make my first batch of Goat's Milk soap and as I've seen on this forum, I made my lye mixture with only 1/2 of the water needed for the recipe so I could add the remaining liquid amount after trace in with the Goat Milk. When I was waiting for the lye mixture to cool I noticed there were white flakes in the lye water. This is an almost new bottle of Lye. Could the lye possibly be eating away the plastic from the pitcher I'm using? I tried to stir them more to dissolve them more but they wouldn't disappear. Should I not use this Lye water for my soap?

Thanks!

Charlynn

I get little floaties in my lye water if the lye pitcher is rinsed with a little soap solution. It doesn't affect my soap in any way. But yours might be different.

Ah... I just finished my fifth batch of soap and had my first painful run-in with lye. I was pouring soap into the mold, needed to brush hair out of my face, and didn't notice that my gloves had a little glob of soap on them. Ouch! After I got the burning to stop (did a little attack combo of water, vinegar, water, drying, then some Neosporin for soothing), I feel just fine aside from a little reddened burned patch on my forehead. Jeez, what a weird place to burn!

Irena - I actually did not know about that! I've been keeping vinegar on hand because all the books/etc say to do this. But makes total sense if it's in fact an exothermic rx. Yikes! I don't think very many people know this...
