Hey all!

I've been looking at picking up a few new techniques, one of them rubbing powdery micas on top of my soaps to let them glisten and bring depth to their look, but that poses a question for me. I've always used the pop mica liquid soap dyes from TKB, and am struggling to replace them since their discontinuance. So now that I'm looking around more, the question poses of how do I do what they did? How do I take a powder mica and turn it into that liquid colorant?

I'd like to keep a good stock of powder micas to use for both coloring as well as rubbing on top of the soap, but I'm not sure how to do so. Or...do I even need to turn them into a liquid colorant? How do you use powders and micas to dye your soaps? Any and all advice is appreciated!

Hi JrVTG,
I'm not sure I'm answering your question .... I buy Pop! Micas at Peak in Colorado and at BrambleBerry (not sure if BB's are the POP! but they are lovely!) to use in & on my soaps.

I mix them in glycerin or alcohol & mix, then I add a small amount of base to them before I color my soap.

If I want them on the top of my soap, I just dust the bottom of my mold or between layers with the mica.

I've actually learned this here. I'm no expert at all, but I'm learning so much here!

Please someone step in and correct me if need be.

You can use micas directly on top of your soaps. You can also make them liquid in a dropper bottle to which you add the mica along with glycerin. You will need to shake the bottle each and every time you use it.

Thank you both for your quick replies! Both are helpful, no doubt. But may I ask one follow up question?

When you mix the micas with glycerin for use in a dropper, what is the ratio of the powders to the glycerin itself? I'm not sure how much to add without it being too much.

Thanks again! ^.^

I didn't weigh mine since I go by color for MP visually, but for 1 oz. of glycerin, I added about 1/8 a tsp. of mica.

jrVTG, Don't worry about TKB Trading Pop Micas. They are reformulating them and they are going to be back, but BETTER!!! I think Kaila is doing that because she has noticed that the Micas are being used in soap because originally they were for cosmetics. I don't know when they are going to be back, but if Kaila said they were, then she will do it. Hold on tight.
