Teach Soap

Hi, this is my 4th attempt at making lotion, trying to tweak my recipe and now math is my worst enemy because I keep coming out with a heavy cream and after reading and tweaking and researching, I have not found out what I am doing wrong. Can you please look at this recipe and let me know where I need to change it to make it more thin and any suggestions on the carrot seed oil additon would be great.

Sweet Almond Oil 1.72 oz
Jojoba Oil .98 oz
Carrot Seed Oil .04 oz ( I wanted to use 2%, and hopefully get benefits to my dry skin, but the
smell is overwhelming)
Seseme Oil .49 oz
E-wax 1.15 oz
Stearic Acid .92 oz
Shea Butter .98 oz
Fragrance .3 oz
Germaben II .08 oz (not sure about this calculation I made)

I would leave out the stearic acid. I would change the preservative to 0.03. This is 0.5%. I would say you have too much in there. You need an accurate scale for a recipe this small. I would also convert it to grams. It's more accurate that way.

Thanks Soapbuddy, especially about the preservative amount. I do have a great jewlers scale and will turn it into grams. Back to the science lab to see what taking out the stearic acid does for the consistancy.

Oopps, I forgot to list in my recipe the water content which is 17.39 oz.

If I leave out the stearic, your recipe with water is 23.05 ozs. For that size batch, you would need 0.11 oz. of a preservative at 0.5%.

It's almost 1am here so I may be wrong but from what you've listed I don't see any water in your recipe. I imagine there must be some in there somewhere so I'll defer to soap buddy's advice on this one. If there isn't, maybe that's your culprit. I use between 70 & 80%.

If you find carrot seed oil too overpowering, you might try evening primrose oil, jojoba oil, or rose hip seed oil as a substitute. I like to add rose geranium essential oil to my skin products as it is very beneficial to the skin.

you could make a 2% dilution with your favorite carrier oil (like jojoba). then when you add the oil to your recipe, the scent may blend better.
