First my apologies, i know this question has been asked before but I could not find the threads using the search module.

My step-father LOVES orange scented soap and asked if I could make him some, sure no problem. But i explained that citrus tends to fade quickly in soaps. I know that 5X or 10X are better choices for soaping but am wondering if i could try sweet orange with an anchor instead since that is what i currently have. If so can someone suggest an anchor that will not overtake the sweet orange? Can I mix in another citrus scent such as Mae Chang? He associates a soap that cleans well with a citrus scent so I am trying to keep it as orangy as possible.

Second question, i knows that citrus EO's are phototoxic but is this something I need to consider in a wash off product as well?

Thanks all,
Erin

Yes, you can use May Chang as an anchor. Vetiver or Patchouli in small amount help too. Soap is a wash off product. I would not worry about the sun sensitivity.

One of my favorite combinations is equal parts sweet orange and cedarwood e.o. I usually use a little clay as an anchor also. You might try five-fold orange instead of sweet orange oil or use 1 part Litsea with 5 parts sweet orange. You can do the Q-Tip test first to see how you like the blend.

The agent causing this sun sensitivity is the bergaptene contained in the oil.Should oil contain a very small amount of bergaptene or 5 methoxypsolaren (5 MOP) - normally below 0.000075% the effect will not be pronounced, so you have no worries because sweet orange oil contains only 0.00005%. So sweet orange is fine to use in anything.
