I have a sampler pack of FO’s from Peak Candle supplies. I have used many of these satisfactorily. However, many of these have vanillin in them, which is a vanilla or related extract, which causes my soap to be off white. A letter to them informed me of the ones that contained vanilla or vanillin but they also mentioned that most FO’s tend to darken or discolor when used in soap. Since some of my favorite scents have vanillin I use Titanium Dioxide, which helped a little but still kept me from getting really nice white soap even staying away from Olive Oil and any oil which had a dark color to it.
I also used the trick of just putting it in the colored soap when swirling and that worked pretty well but I wanted to make some pure white soap having a selection of FO’s that didn’t discolor it.
Do any of you out there know of FO’s and who makes them that don’t tend to tint soaps off white. Using TD is my only solution at present but really doesn’t solve my problem.
Any tips along these line will be appreciated..
Thanks
Jerry S

If I want white soap using FO that contains vanilla, I use Vanilla Stabilizer.
BB sales that but only good for M&P. I get mine from Nature's Garden:

Vanilla stabilizer from Nature's Garden works for CP and all other applications.

Of course you will get a tint depending upon your base oils and the fo's, but quality fo's help too. BB always tells you if the fragrance tints or morphs. As Cat said, using a vanilla stabilizer will help, but over time, your soap will still discolor some. That is a curse of vanilla. So it is basically a trade off. If you want to use vanilla fo's, your best bet is to use the stabilizer, and deal with the small amount of tanning. Hopefully your soap will be all gone by the time it would have changed anyway!

I live here close to Denver where Peak Candle is. I use to purchase from them but have found that their knowledge is in candles and M&P. Also they are rather on the high end of pricing as well. They label their products as B&B not standard FD&C or D&C ect. I have also found a lot of there FO's cause seizing issues.

Just my 0.5 cents (taxes took the rest)

After extensive reading of their web site, I too think that their emphasis is on candles, with m and p thrown in. The CP reviews if any are incomplete in most instances IMO.

I agree with you Kenaslan and Mella on that their emphasis is on candle making and melt and pour as well. I have had a couple of issues with my batch really coming to quick trace after adding their FO's and had to really hustle to get my soap in the mold before it was to thick to work.
I had originally ordered from them because of a recommendation from another soaper that they had a really good price on a sample pack. I think I will take another tack though in the future staying more the the companies that focus on CP and offer more info on what has vanilla and what may and may not have a tendency to seize...

I wrote to Peak and they responded with this....

"The oils that do contain Vanillin will be the French Vanilla & Amber, Brown Sugar, and Amish Harvest. However, almost all of the oils will have a slight coloration to them."
The one that I really like is Fr. Van. Amber and it does tint the soap even with TD...
The other scents that I have from them are:
Clean Cotton FO
Cranberry Apple Marmalade FO
Plumeria FO
Pomegranate FO
Black Canyon FO
They don't seem to color my soap like the ones above, but then I don't use to much scent in my soap, and I include TD in all of my recipes.
What's you take on the above?

I agree with you on not putting the blame on Peak. I just mentioned that I purchased my scents there as information on my thread...Guess I should use a stabilizer when going with FO's with vanillin. But then I guess I can poke around and find another favorite that doesn't have vanilla, and just use those with it in my colored soap...Thanks for the tip on comparing stabilizer to bleach and TD to just a lightener...
