I didn't want to hijack the thread on single oil laundry soap, but I would like to know if you can use the handmade laundry soap in front load machines. Or would it be possible to formulate a recipe that would be low sudsing? So far, I haven't found a detergent that I like for my clothes and front-loading machine and I'm thinking of making something myself, if it would work better. Thank you.

Thanks, Bubbles2! My daughter just sketched that for me today. She's seen me on my soapbox, so I think it's me.

Most homemade laundry soap recipes are low sudsing. I would use about half of the suggested amount and use white vinegar in the rinse dispenser.

I would also check the manual for your machine because some of them are very specific about what to use and not to use. 8)

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. I will go back and read the manual. I'll also spend some time on those links. Thanks lsg, for sending them.

I understand your feelings, SoapingJessi, about long lasting laundry appliances. I had my first washer and dryer over 20 years. It worked great and I gave it to my daughter when she moved out. She sold it 5 years later and I have no doubt it's still going. I thought I'd treat myself to a top-of-the-line Maytag set, because I'd earned some extra money doing bookwork for someone. That thing was so noisy. My husband ran up from the basement to see what was wrong. We called the repairman and he came out to check it out. He told us the good news was it had a great transmission that would last forever. The bad new? That's why it made so much noise. Get used to it! I didn't keep that one any longer than I needed to. I then got a top-of-the-line GE. Either the washer or the dryer broke down, once a month, for the first year. The final straw was when we moved into our new house and I was home alone because I hurt my back. I was where I couldn't hear the machine and when I finally went to check on it, it had overflowed and never stopped. We had the laundry room tiled, in case of a small leak, but this was unbelievable. It flowed out of the room, down the stairway, and also went through the floor into the room downstairs that had hardwood floors. And that's how I ended up with a front loader. Sometimes I wish I had my original Whirlpool!

I always use vinegar for the rinse. Love it!
Thanks again!

I have an HE washer and I use soapnuts. Been using them for about 6 months and they work really well. No problems with the washer and they are all natural and biodegradable.

Beanie, I've never heard of soapnuts. Can you tell me more about them?

This is great. She didn't originally have any problems with using the cloth. It caught her off guard to have him suddenly getting rashes. I will pass this on to her. Thank you.

Too funny just read this post because I just read about Soapnuts and will be adding them to my product line and just posted regarding them to see if anyone else uses or has any thoughts! Glad to hear that you too like them.

They say you can use homemade laundry detergent in HE machines (the one made from grated soap, water, borax, and washing soda). It IS low sudsing, that's for sure. My friends use it and like it. I don't have an HE machine, so I can't tell you how it works in them, but I know people who do use it.
